Case study
Nature’s Cycles is a material exploration by Emirati artist Maitha Al Omaira, inspired by the cyclical rhythms of the natural world. Her experiments with Dunecrete draw from the fleeting bloom of the neem flower, which blossoms only at the end of spring, signalling the close of one cycle and the beginning of another.
Through a series of rectangular tiles, Maitha allows nature itself to shape the outcome. The flowers and leaves she embeds in Dunecrete influence the texture and form, as the material dries unevenly around them, creating opportunities for manipulation and discovery. In some instances, she gently brushes away the surface to reveal organic imprints beneath, traces of growth and decay intertwined.
Much like nature’s own processes, Maitha’s work embraces chance and transformation, reflecting the delicate balance between control and unpredictability. This project captures the dialogue between material innovation, sustainability, and the enduring beauty of the natural world.
